According to Pirate expert Dr. Peter Leeson of George Mason University, “Unlike their Somali successors, early 18th Century pirates, men like Blackbeard, “Black Bart” Roberts, and “Calico” Jack Rackam, weren’t only thieves. They were also early experimenters with some of the modern world’s most cherished values, such as liberty, democracy, and equality.” Pirates of old lived according to the rules set by the Captain and the crew. Everyone agreed to the rules before they set sail as one big happy family. The rules were easy to understand don’t gamble, smoke (things blow up), get into fights, and some pirates were even rule bound to play nice with the ladies. This was democracy in action years before most countries gave up freedom choking monarchies.
