Borderline Personality Disorder

Two percent of the population, more women than men, suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Even mental health professionals are challenged in attempting to help these emotional individuals while maintaining their professional detachment and compassionate manner. Also, individuals who have been abused sometimes present with similar symptoms and their symptomology may be due to a trauma reaction or even Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
People with BPD are likely to have highly unstable patterns of social relationships. They may develop very passionate but unstable attachments; their attitudes towards family, friends, and loved ones swing back and forth between adoration and devaluation. This pattern may affect their relationships with their therapists also. One is never quite sure who will walk through the door when one is treating a person with BPD. Their moods can change rapidly and repeatedly. They may respond with intense emotion and angry recriminations over trivial occurrences. Individuals with BPD are exceedingly sensitive to rejection and separation, even thought the rejection may be simply their interpretation, rather than facts.
