Avoidant Personality Disorder
Published on 19 August 2008 - 11:25

Individuals who are diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder (APD) are frequently diagnosed with Dependent Personality Disorder too. They can become very dependent on the few people in their support system. Only 0.5% to 1.0% of the general population is likely to receive this diagnosis. This is another of the personality disorders that may become less evident with age.
These individuals may respond well to anti-depressants (when indicated) and psychotherapy. Both Social Phobia and Avoidant Personality Disorder are very treatable, my advice to individuals who have these symptoms is—see a therapist and begin to live a fuller more enjoyable life.
Read our 7th article (and take the quiz) in our series on the personality disorders. So far, we have covered psychopathy (no longer listed as a personality disorder, but still very much alive and well), Borderline, Schizoid, Paranoid, Histrionic and Narcissistic Personality Disorders. Personality Disorders begin early in life and can adversely affect suffers (and their family and friends) for a lifetime unless they reach out for help. Learn more about the disorders and read more in-depth coverage in my book, The Manipulative Man.

Hey, my name is Alex aswell,
and the picture is really creative, nice work to whoever drew it up. Also, I’m guessing that self-help groups are not the most effective way to treat someone with this disorder, are they?
